How Baseball Works

Baseball looks complicated for about ten minutes — then it clicks. Here is everything you need to enjoy your first Falcons game at Falconcrest Park.

Timing is everything: a full swing lasts a fraction of a second.

Nine Innings, Two Sides

A game is split into nine innings. In each inning, both teams take a turn batting and fielding. The batting side sends players to the plate one at a time; the fielding side tries to get three outs before runs score. Most runs after nine innings wins — ties are settled with extra innings.

Balls, Strikes and Outs

The pitcher throws, the batter decides. Three strikes and the batter is out; four balls and they walk to first base. Fielders record outs by catching fly balls, tagging runners, or throwing to a base before the runner arrives. Three outs end the half-inning.

How Runs Score

A batter who hits safely becomes a runner and advances around first, second and third base. Touch home plate and that is one run. Clear the outfield fence in fair territory and it is a home run — everyone on base scores.

  • Watch the count: a 3–1 count means the batter can wait for the perfect pitch.
  • Two outs means runners sprint on contact — anything can happen.
  • The seventh-inning stretch is for standing, singing and snacks.

See It Live

The best way to learn is from a grandstand seat. Grab a ticket, arrive an inning early, and ask the fan next to you — Falcons supporters love explaining the game.
